About the company
SMS group consists of the companies that provide construction and mechanical engineering of the metallurgical plants for the production of steel, alluminium, nonferrous metals and press and forging operations.
The company SMS was established in 1871 in Siegen by Carl Eberhard Weiss and initially focused on the forging operations for the production of tools for the mining industry. Gradually the company expanded the scope of its activities and acquired a number of metallurgical enterprises throughout the world. Its current owner, Heinrich Weiss holds the majority of the Group’s shares what makes SMS a fully family-run business.
Structurally SMS Group is divided into two business areas:
SMS Siemag (the former SMS Demag) mostly deals with the production of plants for steel, aluminum and non-ferrous process lines.
SMS Meer focuses on steelmaking, tube production and forging technologies.
Nowadays the group has more than 14000 employees, working at the metallurgical plants all over the world. “The combination of the flexibility of medium-sized company units with the vast resources of a global group” makes SMS one of the leaders of the world metallurgy and aids its productivity and business growth.
The company in Chelyabinsk and the Chelyabinsk region
SMS started cooperation with the South Urals in the 1930s when SMS Demag delivered one of the rolling mills to MMK. However, the parties stopped cooperation for a long time and resumed it only in 2000. Currently the South Urals is one of the top-priority business areas for SMS Group. In 2002 MMK commissioned the new cold rolling mill produced by SMS Demag. In 2006 SMS and MMK made an agreement on the delivery of the plants for the rolling mill- 5000.The new rolling mill run in 2009 produces hot-rolled plate. In 2007 the group started the delivery of the plants for the cold rolling mill-2000 commissioned in 2011. The mill provides high quality rolled products for automobile parts.

SMS launched the 1st major project in Chelyabinsk in 2007. Chelpipe made a contract with SMS Meer on the delivery of the equipment for the new pipe rolling plant, commissioned in 2010. Currently “Vysota 239” is the most up-to-date plant for production large-diameter pipes in Russia and Eastern Europe. In 2009 SMS Siemag started its 1st investment project in Chelyabinsk: Cheltec Group and SMS Siemag started the new company –SMS-Cheltec. The enterprise investment volume is more than 3,5 mln $.The joint venture focuses on repair and maintenance of metallurgic plants, including the delivery of equipment to the rolling mill-5000.In 2009 SMS-Cheltec expanded the scope of its activities and started cooperation with British company Welding Alloys Ltd. Nowadays the services of SMS-Cheltec are used by a great number of regional metallurgical plants.
In 2011 SMS Siemag organized a workshop in Chelyabinsk. For 2 days SMS representatives made presentations on different spheres of SMS activities. The workshop supplied Russian businessmen with the exact information on SMS products and services. Nowadays the prospects of SMS Group in Chelyabinsk are mostly connected with the development of SMS-Cheltec and the ambitious projects of the Ural metallurgy.
